Muslims believe that Muhammad received the Qur'an from God through Archangel Gabriel over a period of twenty-three years of his life. Some Muslims go so far as to say that it is the only book in all of human history, which was memorized word-for-word by someone. The Qur'an consists of 114 Surahs (chapters) and 6,236 Ayat (verses), with an additional 5,236 Hadiths (sayings). It is believed that Muhammad recited the Qur'an in its entirety at one point in his life. The Qur’an contains basic information about the history of creation and guidance for humankind to follow. The Qur'an is said to offer three main purposes: According to the Islamic teachings, certain verses are clear instructions from God showing how He relates to humans. These verses are called the 'muhkamat' (clear). Other verses are allegorical in nature and require spiritual interpretation to better understand what they mean. These verses are called 'mutashabihat' (allegorical). Each chapter or surah consists of several ayahs or verses. Since the Qur’an has 114 chapters, it has 114 surahs with 6,236 ayahs. The six sections of the Qur'an are arranged as follows:
Surah 1-7 is said to be directives from God; thus known as “muhkamat” ( سوره محكمه), meaning they are clear. They are believed to be the most straightforward of all surahs with no room for interpretation. Surah 8-10 is said to be allegorical in nature, thus known as “mutashabihat” ( سوره متشابهه), meaning they need interpretation. They are known as mutashabihat because they are open to interpretation. Surah 11-114 is said to be muhkamat and mutashabihat, meaning they are straightforward in some parts but also contain some chapters which need spiritual interpretation. They are known as muhkamat in some parts and mutashabihat in others.
